What Can We Say? Change Is In Our Blood.

Sometimes I walk into a small business and I wonder...

Are they saving up for something big?

Are they going out of business?

Does anyone care?

There is a business we used to visit regularly in town, and the last time I went not only was half of their offerings out of stock, but also the furniture was stained and broken- with the sofa propped up with blocks!

They were opening a second location. Saving, I guess? But what about your first location?

I worked retail for years before I went into hair. Every season we would do a new floor-set, moving all of our fixtures around to entice shoppers into join in on the fun of new things! Within the season we would do mini-sets, incorporating a new colorway into a collection of beloved staple pieces.

I'm grateful for this experience so that I'm able to give a sense of freshness to our experience at Darling Hair Workshop! We value our environment and the people who visit it daily.

And yes, we are saving up for something new as well, but we want you to feel valued in the process. We have prepared a special place for you at Darling Hair Workshop. We hope you feel the love!

Mr. Wayne Warned Us...

Hello, and welcome to our weekly email! Once a week we send you last minute appointment opportunities and fun facts about what's going on in the life of the salon. Thanks for reading!

September is weird, and Mr. Wayne told the September 2005 intake of the Charleston Cosmetology Institute it would be that way.
Do you know...
-September holds 9 out of the 10 most common birthday dates with September 9 being the single most common birthday in the United States?
-American parents spend an average of $863 on back to school per household?
-Fall starts on September 22 but the temperature is still predicted to be in the 90s.
-The average American family spends $1800 on Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas COMBINED! Wowza!

Why are we bringing this up? Well, we have been slow in the last few weeks, and all of the things I have mentioned above has contributed to it! You might be thinking...

-EVERYONE has a birthday this month! There goes my hair money...
-Back to School was ruthless this year. I have to recover!
-I think I am going to wait until it's cooler because I want to go richer and warmer with my hair this fall...
-The holidays are coming! I am going to wait to get my hair done until then.

What does your stylist say about this (except "oh my gosh please come I'm so broke")?
-Waiting more time between appointments can cost you more in the long run, both in time and money. What is usually a quick retouch can turn into a whole ordeal at your next appointment!
-Waiting until deep into the holidays is counting on something that might not be there: Availability!
-Waiting for a trim can lead to breakage, helpless mornings, and eventually the courage to DIY your cut or color (do we see the $$$ of a color correction in your future?)

If We Had a Reader Board We Would...

The second salon I worked at was in Charleston, SC at a lovely and rather strange place called "Cosmotique." The owner was an eccentric bird- an advocate for naked gardening and Wicca- she boasted of things like getting arrested at an Elton John concert for licking someone, and did she smoke with Willie Nelson? Or was that someone else?

Anyway-

We had a reader board- and we girls were in charge of deciding on cute phrases to entice passersby into the salon. The deal was, we could do it or the owner's husband would do it- and he literally created the copy for things like DVD manuals.

I'm not sure what would make me so anxious about the prospect of my words going up for all of West Ashley to see, but I was! It needed to be clever, and I hadn't figured out that I was just yet.

You get the point. And that was 20 years ago. $9/hour. Free parking. 4 clients. Scared to death about anything but a pixie.

September 13 makes 21 years of being behind the chair! And my, have I certainly grown! From pixies to updos, makeup, winning the North American side of a competition and performing on stage in Europe, opening a salon and finally finding my groove as an owner- yes I am absolutely celebrating!

But there is so much more to do. We have big dreams, and no doubt you've heard many of them. The first? Seeing all four of us- Samantha, Lyndsey, and Patrick as successful as they want to be. So if we had a reader board, it would say something like

I Wouldn't Go Back.

Thank you for opening our weekly email! We send a quick newsletter most weeks to let you know about what is happening or on our minds in the salon!

I wouldn't go back. I really wouldn't. In a month I celebrate 21 years of doing hair, and I really wouldn't give anything to go back to 2005 and it's world of hair.

I wouldn't go back. I really wouldn't. Especially building a clientele- dear goodness it was so hard for someone who is relatively shy of strangers! But as for inspiration photos- let's start here:

Why are you coming into the salon today?

1. Desperation: Split ends, terrible color grow-out, a botched performance from another salon
2. Self care: you just want to feel better. Lighter, fresher, loved, cared for. You know a trip to the salon will do the trick!
3. Inspiration: you saw a haircut/color you love, and you want to have it for yourself! The style matches your aesthetic and ability, and you're excited!
4. Maintenance: you have a "look" and you need your every 4-10 week fix.
5. Aspiration: you want something totally different. It doesn't look like you, it doesn't match your current ability, and it's expensive. You are becoming a new person!
6. Life change: Your face has changed. Your hair has changed. You are having surgery, and it's time to put your big girl pants on and face the music.

Let me offer you some relief: not every trip to the salon needs an inspiration or aspirational image. You can literally just say, "lighten me up!" Or "Just a trim" or "Just make it feel better." We will ask the questions necessary to be sure we don't take it too short, too blonde, or too dark.

For those trips that do require an image (aspirational or inspirational), bring them but hold on to them lightly. We are humans working with a uniquely human product. We always do our best but in some cases we are bound by time, budget, and decades of experience. DO YOU KNOW we offer free consultations? If you are very attached to an image, come in for a consult so that we can honestly assess both plausibility and budget! We would actually love it!

And if you fall into the life change category- just ask! You might not like the answer, but we will gladly help come up with the best way to manage your new look with respect and dignity.

We look forward to having you in our chair- but don't stress too much about finding the perfect inspo pic. We've got you!
