Sept 8th

Today, September 8, marks the victory that ended the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. ✝️🇲🇹 For more than three months, the Ottoman Empire threw an enormous invasion force against the small island of Malta. Standing in its way were the Knights Hospitaller under Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette, together with Maltese civilians and several thousand soldiers determined to hold the island.

The defenders were desperately outnumbered. Contemporary numbers are debated, but the Ottoman expedition is commonly estimated in the tens of thousands, while the Order itself fielded only several hundred knights alongside its allied troops and local defenders. Fort St. Elmo fell after a brutal resistance. Birgu and Senglea were battered by artillery and repeated assaults. Casualties mounted, am******on dwindled and the defenders were pushed close to breaking point.

They held anyway.

By early September, a relief force from Sicily had arrived. The exhausted Ottoman army abandoned the siege, and on September 8, 1565, Malta celebrated the end of the invasion — a date still commemorated there today as Victory Day.

The victory became one of the defining military episodes of 16th-century Christendom. A strategically vital Christian stronghold in the central Mediterranean had survived one of the greatest sieges of the age.

And there is an extraordinary coincidence: September 8 is also the traditional Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Maltese victory became permanently associated with the feast.

More than 460 years later, Malta still remembers.

They came for the island.
The knights held the line.
Christendom endured. ✝️⚔️🇲🇹

When I say,
“I’m praying for you.”
I mean it.
I am actively going to battle for you.

We prioritize scripture in context in our house. My youngest knows by heart, several stories. Makes my heart happy!
